The Fire and the Move

My mother met my father in New Mexico shortly after he was released from prison is the story that I was told. My mother had six children when they met - one she had given to a cousin, and the other five lived with her, my uncle, and grandfather. I was born in New Mexico and lived there until I was a year old. We relocated to Tucson after three of my half siblings died in a fire at my grandfathers home while my mother was out for the evening. I was with my father when the fire took place. My Uncle and several firefighters fought hard to save everyone that night. My mother made the front page of the paper as the mother that showed no emotion when hearing the news of the death of her children. I still have that tattered yellow paper today. My father, mother, myself, and my two half sisters started our new life in a barrio in Tucson. Our family stood out because we were the only inter-racial family, and my father was very flamboyant. He always drove a new Cadillac and adorned himself ...

When You Believe...

Thought I would post this song When You Believe (Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston) since there's a  few people that I know personally that are struggling with some personal issues. Music has always been my friend in good times and bad. This particular song is a song of power and hope. Believe in yourself and believe in miracles...just believe. Peace, love & hugs!

New Gig

On our way to bartend... no, I don't have a party hat on Last night I went as a bartender to a wedding reception, which was my first experience with bartending. I went with my daughter Melissa(ex-bartender) and my daughter Kelsey. I was a bit apprehensive about this gig, but it turned out to be a fun night with great music, good food, and way too much alcohol. I really don't know how people bartend for a living though. First of all, trying to hear with the DJ  blaring music was a challenge. At one time I thought a guy asked for a quarter, but he said water, and another person I thought asked for Tupac. Then you have the ones that just set their cup on the bar and look at you. I looked back just as intense and said, "what, do you want a drink?" I'm all about using your words. When he said yes, he also expected me to remember what he was drinking. He said,"you don't remember?" I wouldn't ask what you wanted if I remembered... there's ...
Dick Clark "America's oldest teenager." My memories of Dick Clark is probably what most of us remember, "American Bandstand."  It changed the way we listened to pop music and introduced us to new dance moves.                                                               I loved how in between performances Dick Clark would chat with the teens, who helped "rate-a-record," turning songs into sensations.I think most of us as teens watching longed to be a part of it all.                 Everyone showed up on "American Bandstand," from Elvis Presley to Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry to Chubby Checker, Ike and Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, and Simon & Garfunkel to name a few. His shows were among the first where blacks and whites performed on the s...

You Want To Know What?

I get emails asking me questions that I typically answer on a personal level, but this one I thought I'd blog. Question: Who are you? I am a wife that has been married to the same man since I was 18, a mother of five and grandmother of 8. I feel those are my bragging rights, but me as an individual - I'm a spiritual individual that loves writing, dancing, fitness, fashion, and life in general. I always thought that I could save the world - I'm still working on it. Question: What are your dislikes? I really hate washing silverware - hate putting it in the dishwasher, and hate putting it away. I dislike bullies no matter what age they are. Don't like rude and pretentious people. Not a fan of drama, don't like disloyal people and I don't like beef. Question: What do you do for fun? Drink! No, the things I do for fun no one else would classify as fun, but fun for me is crafts, re-decorating, taking pictures, gardening, going to Goodwill and hanging out at hom...

My Friday Hell Day

I have to thank God for giving me the gift to forget what a 2 year old with a bad case of the terrible 2's was like, or I'd have one child today. I took my 2 year old granddaughter out shopping and for lunch like I usually do on Fridays. She was bumping to the music as cars passed by, shopped for lipstick like she usually does, and sat and ate her pizza outside of AJ's as usual. She did her hi and bye salutations to those passing by as we enjoyed the sunshine during lunch, but the last stop... the grocery store, she had a melt down. She didn't want to get in the cart which was fine since I only needed a few items. It was when we were standing in line with the candy displayed at her level that got her. She immediately dropped the toilet paper she was holding and went in for a Milky Way. I put the Milky Way back and said you can have Skittles.. wrong move on my part. She was like the bad witch on Wizard of Oz - her body dropped to the ground and screams filled the air...
I love music! It  became my salvation as a young child. " Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." -  Red Auerbach   It's still my refuge today. I can listen to a song and it will take me back to where I was and what I was doing; it allows me to forget life and get lost in the thoughts and experiences of the artist, and it gives me the power to run faster and the strength to lift more in the gym. Music is a beautiful and powerful thing. But a few months ago as I was driving home I heard a song on the radio that irritated the hell out of me. I don't find myself to be a prude when it comes to music, but this song truly rubbed me the wrong way. It's by Snoop Dog and Wiz Khalifa featuring Bruno Mars - Young Wild and Free. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa5B22KAkEk  Are you kidding me? It says, So what we get drunk? So what we smoke weed? We're just having fun We don't care who sees So what we go out? That's how its supposed to be Liv...
