What's A Hero

Hero A hero or heroine is a person or character who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, displays courage or self-sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good. Wikipedia I thought about the definition of a hero when I read that ESPN is receiving criticism for making Caitlyn Jenner the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY Awards. Many are saying that ESPN is just chasing the trend and that Lauren Hill should get the award. I'm not going to give my opinion on this, it just got me thinking of what my definition of a hero is. I have people in my life that I would classify as a hero because of what they've endured, and how they survived. Some of my heroes have taken a stand to correct some of the wrongs in our society. They are loyal, kind, have good morals, and are brave. My heroes come in all genders, ages, colors, sizes, and economic backgrounds. In all honesty, I believe that most of us are a hero in the eyes of some...

September 11th

When I woke up this morning and realized the date I immediately remembered where I was when I heard the news. I was getting ready for work and had Good Morning America on when I heard the news of a terrorist attack. I was working at Mountain Ridge High School at the time - when I got to my classroom I turned the television on to continue watching the news until the kids started trickling in. I remember all the staff at the school feeling like I did - shocked and saddened. Today pray for families and friends that lost loved ones in the terrorist attacks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_11_attacks “Now, we have inscribed a new memory alongside those others. It’s a memory of tragedy and shock, of loss and mourning. But not only of loss and mourning. It’s also a memory of bravery and self-sacrifice, and the love that lays down its life for a friend–even a friend whose name it never knew. “ - President George W. Bush, December 11, 2001
Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father's_Day This Sunday is Father's Day - I have one granddaughter that doesn't have a relationship with her father. My husband has always been Grandfather/Father for her. Also, I have a son that doesn't fit my definition of a father. He's rarely with my granddaughter so isn't providing for her emotionally, and he definitely doesn't provide for her financially. This isn't the life I wanted for my grandchildren, and if you're a grandparent you know how much it breaks your heart. I am happy to say that my husband and oldest son has taken their role of being a father serious - thank God for that, and Happy Father's Day to them! I came across this  -  thought I'd share. A man isn’t: Someone who runs from his responsibilities A person who makes excuses A person who strik...
